The Michigan State AFL-CIO Endorses Mark Schauer for Governor and Gary Peters for U.S. Senate
Endorsements include Jerry Cannon, Dan Kildee, Pam Byrnes, Sandy Levin, and John Conyers for Congress
(Lansing, Michigan) The Michigan State AFL-CIO Executive Council and General Board met in Lansing today and unanimously elected to make the following 2014 election endorsements:
- Mark Schauer, Governor
- Gary Peters, U.S. Senate
- Jerry Cannon, U.S. House – CD 1
- Dan Kildee, U.S. House – CD 5
- Pam Byrnes, U.S. House – CD 7
- Sandy Levin, U.S. House – CD 9
- John Conyers, U.S. House – CD 13
“Mark Schauer is a fierce advocate for the middle class who fought to save Michigan auto jobs while in Congress,” said Michigan AFL-CIO President Karla Swift. “Mark is ready to fight for students and seniors as governor. This is in sharp contrast to Rick Snyder, who cut school funding and taxed seniors in order to give tax cuts to corporations, even if they ship jobs overseas.”
“The son of a veteran and public school teacher and a nurse’s aide, Gary Peters grew up in a Michigan middle class household. That’s why early on, Gary learned the Michigan values of hard work, service, and integrity, and that’s what he fights for every day,” said President Swift. “Gary’s record as an outspoken champion for ‘Making it in Michigan’ and bringing back good jobs has earned him the support of working people. Whether it’s standing up for Michigan autos and workers or fighting to create good-paying Michigan jobs, Gary is the strong independent voice Michigan’s middle class needs in the U.S. Senate.”
“All of the candidates that the Michigan AFL-CIO supports recognize the urgent need to raise our minimum wage. No one who works full time should have to raise their children in poverty,” said Swift. “The Michigan State AFL-CIO endorsements are made democratically and carry with them a commitment from working people. We will talk to our coworkers, make phone calls, knock on doors and get out the vote.”
On Wednesday, March 19, Mark Schauer will accept the Michigan State AFL-CIO’s gubernatorial endorsement for from a delegation of Michigan workers.
