Mark Schauer Accepts the Enthusiastic Endorsement of Michigan Working Families
Workers and retirees present Schauer with the Michigan State AFL-CIO endorsement
(Detroit, Michigan) Mark Schauer accepted the Michigan State AFL-CIO endorsement for governor directly from a huge crowd of eager workers in Detroit this afternoon. Speakers included an autoworker, a US Postal Service retiree, a teacher, a nurse and a journeyman laborer.
“While in Congress, Mark Schauer supported loans to help the auto companies and their suppliers retool and develop new technologies to build the cars of the future in Michigan,” said Jerry King, a member of UAW Local 140 employed at the Chrysler Warren Trunk Assembly Plant. “Without Schauer’s leadership, it is unlikely that my wife and I would have good middle class jobs today.”
The large and animated audience chanted in support of Schauer and waived orange and blue placards highlighting Schauer’s commitment to a fair economy.
“At the age of 55 no one would hire me. Fortunately, I was able to get the training that I needed to learn a new set of skills thanks to the Laborer’s union apprenticeship program,” said Cynthia Stevens.
Stevens is the 2013 LIUNA Apprentice of the Year. “I am here today supporting Mark Schauer, because Mark will expand access to the kind of comprehensive job training I benefited from. He understands that a middle class job is the product of a good education and a lifelong commitment to learning.”
“It’s an honor to have the support of Michigan’s working families,” said Schauer. “I am committed to building an economy that works for the middle class, not just the wealthy and the well-connected. As governor, I’ll make education a top economic priority to help our kids compete for high-wage, high skill jobs, and I’ll fight to get rid of the job-killing Snyder Retirement Tax.”
“Mark Schauer is a fierce advocate for the middle class who fought to save Michigan auto jobs while in Congress,” said Michigan AFL-CIO President Karla Swift. “Mark is ready to fight for students and seniors as governor. This is in sharp contrast to Rick Snyder, who cut school funding and taxed seniors in order to give tax cuts to corporations, even if they ship jobs overseas.”
